In 1994, about 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu militias after the assassination of an ethnic Hutu leader. It was a systematic genocide carried out by one ethnic group over another. It is estimated that 300,000 of the victims were children. The killing was largely accomplished by the use of machetes. Entire roads were filled with the corpses of the Tutsis. The United Nations sent in peacekeepers who were not authorized to fire a single bullet. They were completely ineffective in stopping the massacres. Although the US government knew what was happening, then president Bill Clinton did nothing to save them.
